Classical Music and Artificial Intelligence on the Romanian Athenaeum Stage in the Recital of Pianist Sînziana Mircea
Wednesday, July 12th, the Summer Magic Festival presented an innovative concert on the stage of the Romanian Athenaeum, featuring musicians from Romania, Italy, and Ukraine, accompanied by live video mapping projections. In the second event of the prestigious festival, now in its 12th edition, pianist and composer Sînziana Mircea presented the chamber concert "Imagine Baroque – Quasi una fantasia," a concept where classical music was accompanied by Artificial Intelligence.
Innovation was the trademark of pianist Sînziana Mircea, who once again surprised the audience with a concert that brought together piano, organ, and flute, visually accompanied by live video mapping projections. The novelty lay in the rare combination of these three instruments, in a repertoire specially composed by Sînziana Mircea for them. The concert began with the famous Moonlight Sonata by L.v. Beethoven and Clair de Lune by C. Debussy, followed by Toccata by J.S. Bach, Passacaglia by G.F. Handel, Tango by I. Albeniz, as well as original compositions by the pianist, such as Anonimul Venezian, Insieme, and Aurora Suite for piano and organ. Over two hours of music, the piano was joined by the organ – the most representative instrument of the Baroque period – and the flute, in an extremely rare concept.
“This project is the result of teamwork and friendships built over many years, where organizers, artists, content creators, and technology producers come together to present classical music in a new light to the Romanian audience. This was the fourth time I returned to the stage of the Summer Magic Festival, and I felt extremely happy and grateful for this opportunity. It is a privilege for any musician to present their works in such a prestigious festival, and I wholeheartedly thank Mr. Director Dorin Ioniță for all the trust and artistic freedom granted in creating truly unique programs, year after year. Together with Mrs. Carmen Mihai and their partners, the Lanto team transforms Bucharest summer evenings into truly magical nights.”
The International Tour "Imagine Baroque – Quasi una Fantasia" represented the continuation of the project launched by the Romanian pianist and composer in 2022, as part of the "Imagine" tour series that began in 2019 with the International "Imagine Chopin" Tour. In 2023, the series of innovations continued with the presentation of an equally unusual and fascinating duo: piano and organ, with the flute joining in later. Worldwide, piano and organ recitals are very rarely presented due to the lack of literature for such a duo. To bring this project to the stage, Sînziana Mircea created her own transcriptions and compositions for piano-organ duo and piano-organ-flute trio.
“The entire concert speaks about God, about the dialogue between man and divinity, in the deepest Baroque spirit. Equally, it is about a journey through a spiritual universe, led by music, in an increasingly technologized world, visually illustrated by the imagination of artist Adistu, with the help of Artificial Intelligence, which introduces another dimension of the contemporary world – the virtual one. Thus, after previous editions, where we presented works for solo piano or two pianos, as well as the combination of piano with classical guitar, live electronics, synthesizer, nature sounds, or the human voice, this year I aimed to bring back to the audience the grandeur of the Baroque era through extremely rare timbral combinations between piano, organ, and flute.”
Sînziana Mircea’s guest on this tour was Italian organist Davide Mariano, one of the most talented and active young organists internationally, with performances on stages such as Musikverein and Konzerthaus Vienna, Notre Dame in Paris, and Suntory Hall in Tokyo.
“After the concerts in Timișoara and Sardinia with my colleague and good friend Sînziana Mircea, I was honored to have the chance to debut at the George Enescu Philharmonic in Bucharest in such a prestigious festival. This tour was also a premiere for me, being the first time I performed chamber recitals for an organ and piano duo. Each of the two instruments is a universe in itself, being very beloved by audiences everywhere. Therefore, the sound combination of the two is a regal in itself, while also being a true challenge for any musician due to the unequal volume ratio between the two instruments. Moreover, in previous concerts on the tour, I stood with my back to Sînziana, at a distance of 10 meters, even on different levels, as was the case in Timișoara. Therefore, in the absence of direct visual contact, all that matters is the almost telepathic coordination, in an exceptionally complex repertoire, where sound balance is very hard to achieve, but the result is overwhelming,” declared Italian organist Davide Mariano.
A special work composed by Sînziana Mircea for this tour was the Aurora Suite for piano and organ, resulting from her research at the Library of the Conservatory in Venice regarding Italian Baroque.
"The suite is composed of three parts – Genesis, Zephyr, and Aurora, inspired by Greek mythology and the Renaissance paintings of Sandro Botticelli. The work represents a journey through millennia of universal art and spirituality. Thus, the goddess Aurora is the daughter of the Titans, sister to the Moon and the Sun, and heralds the dawn. At the same time, she is the mother of the evening star and the winds, among which is Zephyr, the gentle wind that brings spring. The figure of Aurora has fascinated poets and philosophers for millennia, including Homer, Ovid, and Shakespeare. The 'Aurora' suite reflects this complex symbolism, combining Greek mythology with Italian Renaissance art, in the musical sounds of the 21st century. The sound combination of the Baroque era's symbolic instrument – the organ – and the piano is meant to reflect the duality of divinity/human or light/darkness. The work concludes with the triumph of Light brought by Aurora over darkness, and, like Botticelli's 'Primavera,' it represents a new beginning, a cosmic rebirth. I couldn't wait to perform it on the stage of the Romanian Athenaeum on July 12!" said Sînziana Mircea.
As a special guest, Ukrainian-born Romanian flutist Maria Velia joined the concert. A student at the National University of Music in Bucharest, Maria Velia received the "Youth of Music - Prețuiește viața" award granted by the MuseArt Association, coordinated by Sînziana Mircea, and the Prețuiește Viața Foundation coordinated by Andreea Marin.
As in previous years, the concert combined classical music and technology through live video mapping projections created by visual artist Adistu with the help of artificial intelligence.
"The collaboration with visual artist Adistu began on the stage of Sala Radio in 2019, during the Imagine Chopin Tour, out of a desire to enrich the audience's experience through the synergy of the arts. Since then, the music of each tour in the 'Imagine' cycle has been visually illustrated by Adistu's art, which year after year brings new elements of innovation, incorporating the latest video mapping techniques. It is a very complex process carried out live, where sound impulses picked up by the microphone are coordinated with the images, reflecting the live sound pulses. I would like to thank our partner Epson Romania, who joined us for the second time in such an innovative project, brought to life with the help of powerful, state-of-the-art projectors. I couldn't wait to meet the audience at the Romanian Athenaeum for a true celebration of music and light!" concluded pianist and composer Sînziana Mircea.

Classical piano, live electronic music and live video mapping on the stage of the Bucharest Philharmonic
The extraordinary recital "Imagine Baroque," which took place on July 20th 2022 presented a unique concert in which classical music, electronic sounds, and live video mapping carried the audience through three centuries of music, creating an unforgettable experience.
Internationally renowned artists – pianist Sînziana Mircea, soprano Laura Tătulescu, composer Giovanni Dinello, and visual artist Adistu – staged a unique concert of classical music, electronic music, and live video mapping, bringing to the Romanian Athenaeum the magnificent harmonies of Italian Baroque, wrapped in the vibrant attire of the 21st century.
In addition to the classical music repertoire well known to music lovers everywhere, for the first time in the last 300 years, two cantatas for soprano and piano composed by the Italian composer Benedetto Marcello in the 17th century were brought to the spotlight. These unknown Baroque works were presented to the public for the first time nationally, and possibly globally, performed by two Romanian musicians: world-renowned soprano Laura Tatulescu and pianist Sînziana Mircea.
The invaluable manuscripts of the two cantatas, dating from the 17th century and still unpublished, were discovered by Sînziana Mircea in the library of the Conservatory in Venice, which bears the name of the famous composer, as part of the "Nicolae Iorga" research scholarship. The prestigious "Nicolae Iorga" Scholarship is awarded annually by the Ministry of Education and Research to the most brilliant young Romanian researchers and artists, following an extremely rigorous project competition held at the national level. In 2021, Sînziana won this research scholarship with the project "Reinterpreting Baroque Music in the Contemporary Interdisciplinary Piano Recital." Thus, the concert proposed by the young pianist within the "Summer Magic" Festival on July 20 represented one of the results of this project, carried out with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Venice and the "Benedetto Marcello" Conservatory, where innovation met history and technology in a synergy achieved by internationally renowned artists from Romania and Italy at the highest level.
Moreover, within the same recital, which combined classical and electronic music, the "Serenissima" Suite for acoustic piano and synthesizer, composed by Sînziana Mircea as part of the same project, was premiered worldwide. It was performed alongside Italian composer Giovanni Dinello, a graduate of the Venice Conservatory, specializing in "Electronic Music." The entire musical project was accompanied by video projections and video mapping created by the extraordinary video mapping artist Adistu, winner of multiple national and international awards in specialized competitions.
The magnificent music on piano and synthesizer was exceptionally complemented by the soft and deeply vibrant voice of soprano Laura Tatulescu, who has graced stages such as the Vienna State Opera, Munich State Opera, Korea National Opera, and Los Angeles Opera, under the baton of renowned conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Daniele Gatti, and Kent Nagano.

FORTUNA - PIANO SENSATION
Album launch - December 2020
The first album released by a Romanian pianist as both performer and composer at Electrecord in over 30 years
World-renowned pianist Sînziana Mircea, known for her tours in countries such as China, Japan, and the United States, released her author album "Fortuna – Piano Sensation" today. This time, the musician presented herself to the public both as a performer and a composer, marking her debut author album.
The album "Fortuna – Piano Sensation" features a series of 15 compositions by Sînziana Mircea on famous classical music themes such as Carmina Burana by Carl Orff, and works inspired by the music of Chopin, Bach, and Handel. The album includes live concert recordings from the Stockholm Philharmonic and studio recordings made at the legendary Electrecord recording studio.
"We are very excited to support this young pianist who has embarked on the path of composition for the first time with Electrecord. Moreover, this is the first album created by a Romanian pianist as both performer and composer in over 30 years, released by our record label. We are proud to mention that recordings by George Enescu and Dinu Lipatti, performing their own compositions, were first published at Electrecord in the mid-20th century. We have a long-standing tradition, which we are happy to continue in 2020 with projects like Sînziana Mircea's album," said Cornelia Andreescu, General Director of Electrecord.
The validation of the pianist's compositions was provided this year by BBC Radio 3, which broadcast several of the pieces through the European Broadcasting Union, in a show listened to by over a million listeners in thirteen countries. Two compositions were created under the Brătianu Scholarship granted by the Ministry of Culture in the first series of 2020. Sînziana Mircea's compositions offer listeners unique arrangements for piano, guitar, soprano, as well as for 2 or 3 pianos.
The guests on Sînziana Mircea's album include guitarist Raisa Mihai, both as performer and co-author, and soprano Amalia Lazarciuc. The album release was preceded by a series of four music videos, filmed entirely in Romania and produced by Dan Gherghiceanu/AeroView, with the support of the National Museum of Art of Romania. The audio recordings were coordinated by sound engineer Dan Corjos.
The concert at the Stockholm Philharmonic took place in 2019, organized by the Romanian Cultural Institute in Stockholm and the Romanian Embassy in Sweden to celebrate Romania's National Day. The artist chose to include pieces from this concert on the album to bring back the warm and emotional atmosphere of the concert hall in the difficult context of 2020, when concerts were suspended due to the pandemic.
Sînziana Mircea shared: "It is a new experience for me, and I am very happy to share it with you and to present the piano variations on famous classical music themes. The inspiration for this journey comes from an old tradition where composers used each other's themes as starting points for new pieces, thus discovering new horizons. This is evidenced by none other than J.S. Bach and his famous piano version of the moving Adagio for oboe and orchestra, composed by his Italian contemporary, Alessandro Marcello."
The album is available at the Electrecord store, on the Emag.ro platform, at Cărturești, and will be available through major bookstore chains. In digital format, it is available on major streaming platforms, including iTunes and Spotify. You can listen to some of the pieces included on this album on the pianist's YouTube channel, and you can watch the music video for the piece "Fortuna" here. All the pieces on the album are detailed in the attached album booklet.

"IMAGINE CHOPIN" INTERNATIONAL TOUR 2019
Romania, UK, Sweden, Italy, Japan
The immersive concert at Sala Radio was a groundbreaking event that marked the start of the innovative "Imagine" concert series conceived and presented by Sînziana Mircea. This series has been a true innovation in the classical music field, bringing immersive concerts on stage starting in 2019. Selected by BBC Radio 3 as a headline performance, the concert was broadcast entirely on their channel twice in 2020 and 2021.
One of the most beloved Romanian pianists of the younger generation, pianist Sînziana Mircea, held the "Imagine Chopin" recital on November 14th at 7:00 PM at Sala Radio. This unique concept intertwined works by the well-known Polish composer with transcriptions for piano, guitar, and soprano, created by the concert's soloists themselves, accompanied by immersive video projections and live video mapping.
This innovative approach brought a fresh perspective to the classical music repertoire, enhancing it with visual elements and the rare combination of piano and guitar.
Joining Sînziana Mircea on the stage at Sala Radio were guitarist Raisa Mihai and soprano Amalia Lazarciuc. These three young musicians are teachers at MuseArt Academy, with the MuseArt Association being the organizer of the entire "Imagine Chopin" project, which also included four recitals held in at the Steinway Hall London, Stockholm Philharmonic, Venice Conservatoire, Bistrița, Târgu Mureș, and Sfântu Gheorghe - Transilvania.
Excerpts from the Stockholm concert were later included on the "Fortuna" album, released by Sînziana Mircea on CD under the Electrecord label.
